What Happened: Breonna Taylor, a 26 year old emergency room technician, was shot and killed by Louisville Metro Police Department officers Brett Hankison, Jon Mattingly, and Myles Cosgrove. Taylor and her partner Walker were asleep when the officers entered her home under a no-knock search warrant during a narcotics investigation. Walker, a licensed gun owner, called 911 and shot at the officers first, believing that his home was being invaded. The officers returned fire, and Taylor was shot eight times. No drugs were found in the apartment, and the true targets of the investigation were located in a neighborhood more than 10 miles away.
Charges: Walker was initially charged with first-degree assault and attempted murder of a police officer. On May 15, Taylor’s family filed a wrongful death lawsuit.
Aftermath: Widespread national protest. LMPD now requires all officers to wear body cameras. On May 21, Police Chief Steve Conrad announced his retirement effective June 30, only to be fired on June 1. Learn more at sources below.
