What Happened: Prince Jones, an affluent 25 year old student at Howard University, was shot and killed by Cpl. Carlton B. Jones (no relation). Prince Jones was unarmed and driving a Jeep. The officer was undercover and followed Prince Jones for 15 miles in an unmarked vehicle. While not in uniform and not displaying a badge, the officer shot Prince Jones six times. The officer said later that he mistakenly thought that he was following someone else.
Charges: Criminal charges were not filed against Carlton Jones.
Aftermath: “In January [2006], a Circuit Court civil jury awarded $2.5 million in damages” to Prince Jones’ daughter. Author Ta-Nehisi Coates describes Prince Jones’ story in his book Between the World and Me. Learn more at sources below.
